Mapping Tutorial

Recently, there has been a new in game map editor to help find good and active members. Unfortunately, not many people know how to map or need help making their maps.

This guide will help you learn the basics of mapping as well as tips on mapping and uploading.

This guide contains:

  • How to Use the Mapping System
  • Tips on Making Your Own Maps
  • How to Take a Screenshot of Your Entire Map
  • How to Upload Your Map on the Forums

How to Use the Mapping System

First, the mapping system is located at New Pavillion City. It is accessible from the computer outside of the auction house. It is outlined with a red box. Step on the computer to access the mapping system.
null

———-

When you walk in front of the mapping system computer, this screen will pop up. Simply press the button to enter the mapping system.
null

———-

Now you will find yourself on a black map. This is the map you will start to map on. You will notice you have admin speed. It will help you create and finish your maps at a much faster speed. You will notice two menus pop up as well. They are the Layers Menu, and the Tilesheets Menu. I’ll start by explaining the Layers Menu

———-

Here you will see many buttons to click.
null
This is what the buttons do:

  • Ground - This is the lowest layer, every tile will be able to overlap this layer.
    - This would be used for ground tiles like grass or snow.
  • Mask - This is the second layer of the map, It is able to go ontop of ground but any other layer will overlap it.
    - This can be used for many things including trees and routes and grass.
  • Animation - This is just like mask, except it blinks every few seconds. You put a similar tile underneath this tile to make it look like its moving.
    - This is used to make things move like flowers and other stuff. Each flower will have 2 tiles for that flower. You would put one tile as the mask and the other tile as the animation to make it look like its moving. This is not needed unless your maps will be actually used in the game
  • Mask 2 - This is like mask except it can overlap mask and ground aswell.
    - This can be used for tiles that need to overlap other tiles, like a bush on a route or a decoration tree overlapping a ledge of a cliff that cant be get to by regular players.
  • Animation - This is the same as animation but it can overlap the mask animation and all underneath it.
    - This would be used exactly like animation except it would need to be used with mask 2.
  • Fringe - This is fringe, it makes the tile overlap anything else under it. It also will overlap your character.
    - Fringe would be used for any tiles that the player might walk underneath, for example: The top of a tree or the top of a building.
  • Animation - This is the same as the other animations except it is used to make fringe animations. It can overlap the other layers under it.
    - Same as animation except used with Fringe.
  • Fringe 2- This is the last layer. It overlaps everything since it is the highest. It is used if you need something fringed ontop of an already fringed tile.
    - This can overlap a fringe tile.
  • Animation - Same as the fringe animation tile except it can overlap it.
    - Same as animation except used for fringe 2.

Next is the Tilesheet menu. This has many menus inside of it and is used to select tiles and place them on the map. You can select many tiles by pressing control and clicking another tile.
NOTE: When selecting multiple tiles, you can only click tiles that are underneath it or to the right of it, if you try to select multiple tiles by going up or to the right, it will not work.

The tilesheet menu has many menus. Lets start off with the map menu.

There are three buttons to select but only two of them are usefull and you only need to use one right now.

  • Properties - Used to change the properties of the map
  • Fill - Fills the entire map with the tile you selected in the layer you selected.
    - Fill will also fill the map with attributes if they are selected, so make sure you are set to the layer menu if you are using fill.

———-

Next is the Tilesheet menu, this has 12 tilesheets with different tiles in them.
null

  • Tilesheet 0 - This has tiles for houses
  • Tilesheet 1 - This has tiles for houses, caves, pokemon centers, pokemarts, buildings, water tiles, inside cave tiles, and museum tiles.

———-

This is the Select type menu screen. There are three choices here but only two of them are usefull and Layers is the only one you need to use now.
null

  • Layers - The type you are currently using for making maps
  • Attributes- Used when you are an official mapper. This is to add blocks, warps, and scripts.

This is the Attribute menu screen. There are three choices here but you will most likely only be using the first two.
null

  • Block - This blocks the player from stepping on that tile.
  • Warp - This will let the tile you apply this to, warp to the location you enter (map # and x/y co-ordinates).
  • Script - This is to make things happen like the pokecenter healing spot and others.

Tips on Making Your Own Map
This will provide tips on making your own route map.

First, select the ground tile you want.
null

Then press map, and then fill.
null

Make sure the ground layer is set or else any other setting with make it that layer.
null
———-
Next, start making the basic outline for your route. This should be done in mask.
null

Now, that you have the basic outline, finish it, and make sure your map does not have long straight lines, short small lines and curves are the best to have unique maps.
null
———-
Now that your route is clearly outlined, start making the outlines for where you will put your trees. Make sure the trees that cant be reached underneath are set to the Mask layer.
null

Now finish your trees while adding fringed tops to the trees that players can walk underneath.
null
———-
Now that your have your route and your trees, start adding the grass tiles. These can be done in the Mask layer.
null
———-
Great job! Your map is almost complete! Now all you do is have to add the little details in the map. This can be done in mask and mask 2.
null
———-
Congrats! You finished your map! Now you can use the techniques given to make other maps like cave maps or forest maps!

How to Take a Screenshot of the Entire Map
NOTE: This is for maps that cant be screenshotted on one try.

First, go to the top left most of your map and take a screenshot by pressing the Printscreen button. Then paste this in a picture program like paint. After you post it in paint, edit out the map part onto another paint program.
null

Next, make a fringed 2 tile on the very right side of your map that can overlap another tile, not replace it(Preferably one the is noticeable).
null

Now, move all the way left so the tile you fringed just came off the map so you cant see it anymore.
null

Now take a screenshot of that map and edit it onto the previous map you edited so it looks like its connected.

Lastly, repeat these steps until you have your full map on the paint program, and since you moved past the fringed tile so you can see it, it wont show up into your map.
null
If i edited the rest of the map, this map wouldnt be so small, but i didnt have time.

null

Next, click the file again so it zooms in even more.
null

Now right click the picture and click copy url address. If you are using IE then you need to click page properties and copy the picture url.

After all that, create your thread on the forums in the correct area which is the map presentation section in the art presentation subforum. Click the tiny mountain with the sun and it will ask you for a url address. Paste the url address you copied and press enter. Now when you post the thread, the picture will show in the entire thread instead of just a link.
